As Nardin Academy continues to maximize student potential through an increase in health and wellness programming, the community welcomed Dr. Lisa Damour, Ph.D. to campus on Wednesday, September 12 as part of the 2018-19 Distinguished Speaker Series.
Dr. Damour's visit offered an invaluable opportunity for the community to engage in thought-provoking discussion relating to girls' development during complex times. Drawing on her years of clinical experience as a psychologist, teacher, speaker, and consultant directing the Laurel School's Center for Research on Girls., Dr. Damour led separate sessions for both high school girls and high school faculty before speaking with parents from across the Academy at 7 p.m. in the chapel.
In her conversation with the girls in the high school gymnasium, she advised, "what restores you is highly personal," reminding students to spend time discovering what reenergizes and restores them before returning to schoolwork.
Dr. Damour also spent valuable time with the high school faculty discussing how to engage girls in meaningful conversations in the new advisory program.
When speaking with the parents, Dr. Damour explained several topics from her New York Times best-selling book Untangled: Guiding Teenage Girls Through the Seven Transitions into Adulthood, while revealing themes from her new book Under Pressure: Confronting the Epidemic of Stress and Anxiety in Girls which will be published in 2019. She impressed upon families the importance of teaching girls how to be more tactical when it comes to school in order to combat anxiety and promote wellness,
Thank you to Dr. Damour for sharing such thoughtful words with our community!
