On Friday, November 9, award-winning author and naturalist Jennifer Ward visited the Nardin Academy campus as part of a collaboration with WNY Children's Book Expo and Monkey See, Monkey Do Bookstore for a full day of activities with students in both the Montessori and Lower School.
Ward's popular books include There Was a Coyote Who Swallowed a Flea, illustrated by Steve Gray, and Mama Built a Little Nest, illustrated by Steve Jenkins.
As a former teacher, Ward organized her presentations and interactive read alouds by age, offering insights into the writing process as appropriate. In the morning, she visited Montessori where children ages 18 months - 4 years old took part in counting, singing, rhyming as she read Over in the Garden using puppets that included bees, ladybugs and other garden critters.
For Elementary and Montessori Kindergarten students, Ward read aloud from her book Mama Dug A Little Den. With Elementary and Montessori Grades 1 & 2, her interactive read aloud offered insights into both writing and illustrating. Students had the opportunity to learn cartoon illustrations with a step-by-step interactive guide on how to draw one of the characters in the book.
With Elementary and Montessori Grades 3 & 4, Ward read There Was a Coyote Who Swallowed a Flea and discussed with the students the business of publishing and working as an author or illustrator.
Each group had the opportunity to have their own books signed, and Ward spent time talking to each individual child about their love for reading.
Thank you, Jennifer Ward, for visiting our campus and inspiring our students to follow their passions!
Families can visit Ward and other authors at the free WNY Children's Book Expo Saturday, November 10, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center.
