WinterMission: Offering Students Unique Experiential Learning Opportunities

From taking a tour of the CNN New York bureau’s newsroom to observing Oishei Children’s Hospital in action, our High School students spent the first week of the second semester immersed in one of twenty different WinterMission sessions this year.

Running from January 6 through the 10th, Nardin’s second annual WinterMission offered our young women several experiential learning opportunities in Western New York and beyond.

Here in the Buffalo-area, some students toured the local office of the Department of Homeland Security, participated in a mindfulness retreat and shadowed at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. In New York City, some young women visited with alumnae Kerry Pieri ‘99 at work at Hearst Magazines, others toured historic churches in Savannah, Georgia and a group visited the Walnut Street Theater, the oldest continuously operating theater in the U.S., with alumnae Rita Sirianni ’10 in Philadelphia.

"WinterMission is a unique opportunity for our young women to gain a snapshot into so many different careers, communities and organizations,” said Jennifer Westerholt '95, Director of Alumni Relations and a chaperone for the New York City WinterMission. "Nardin is lucky to have alumnae who are energized and excited to engage with current students and, this year, many of our students had the opportunity to meet our graduates and learn about their college and professional experiences in Buffalo, New York City and Philadelphia."

Started in 2019, WinterMission is designed to give students the chance to participate in internships, academic intensives, travel and service that reflect Nardin's mission. This year’s WinterMission sessions included:
