World Language

Student writing on boardNardin's World Language curriculum offers courses in Spanish, French, Latin, and Mandarin. Learning extends beyond the texts, as students have the opportunity to travel, attend lectures, attend a mass in another language, and participate in national exams.

French I

Elementary instruction in French. Open to freshmen, and to sophomores/ juniors as a second language. Student must have completed two years of her first world language. Priority placement will be given to freshmen. 1 year, level 1.

French II

Prerequisite: French I, or successful completion of French I exam. 1 year, level 1.

French III (H)

Honors level third year French. 1 year, level 3. Prerequisite: French II or successful completion of the French II Exam.

French IV (H)

Study of French history, contemporary culture, literature, and advanced French grammar, with emphasis on conversational skills, short films, short stories, and articles. Class is conducted in French. Students must have successfully completed French III H. 1 year, level 3.

French V (H)

Speaking skills are sharpened and vocabulary base is increased through the use of realia during the first semester. Writing skills are developed further, resulting in a creative short story written in French. Second semester is devoted to reading and discussing one major novel and a play. Students must have successfully completed French IV H. 1 year, level 3.

AP French

College level study of advanced French language and culture with an equal emphasis on listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Students must have successfully completed French IV H. AP exam required. $93.00 AP exam fee required. 1 year, level 4.

Spanish I

Elementary instruction in Spanish. Open to freshmen, and to sophomores/ juniors as a second language. Student must have completed two years of her first world language. Priority placement will be given to freshmen 1 year, level 1.

Spanish II

Students must have successfully completed Spanish I or successful completion of Spanish I exam. Students will learn new grammar and expand vocabulary. Also, will learn about Hispanic culture. 1 year, level 1.

Spanish III (H)

A study and review of Spanish grammar as spoken in Spanish speaking countries. Classes are conducted in Spanish. Prerequisite: Spanish II or successful completion of Spanish II exam. 1 year, level 3.

Spanish IV (H)

Review of grammar and study of advanced grammar, vocabulary, and Hispanic culture and literature with an emphasis on conversational skills. Class is conducted in Spanish Students must have successfully completed Spanish III H. 1 year, level 3.

Spanish V (H)

Conversational practice, continued grammar and vocabulary development, and further study of Spanish-speaking cultures. Students must have successfully completed Spanish IV H. 1 year, level 3.

AP Spanish

College level study of advanced Spanish language and culture with an emphasis on listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Students must have successfully completed Spanish IV H. AP exam is required. $93.00 AP exam fee required. 1 year, level 4.

Latin I

Elementary instruction in Latin. Open to freshmen, and to sophomores/ juniors as a second language. Student must have completed two years of her first world language. Priority placement will be given to freshmen. 1 year, level 1.

Latin II

Students must have successfully completed Latin I or Latin I exam. 1 year, level 1.

Latin III (H)

Students must have successfully completed Latin II or Latin II exam. 1 year, level 3.

Latin IV (H)

Further study of Latin language and literature with an emphasis on development of translation skills through a variety of genres. Students must have successfully completed Latin III. 1 year, level 3

Mandarin I

Elementary instruction in Mandarin language and culture. Open only to students who have completed at least two years of their first world language. This is added as a second language since all students must complete three years of a single world language while at Nardin. 1 year, level 1.

Mandarin II

Continued instruction at a higher level of Mandarin language and culture. Prerequisite: Mandarin I. 1 year, level 1.
